The sport’s role in establishing a cohesive Caribbean society, one that helped heal the social and political divisions created by an apartheid-based system, and subsequently paved the way for the unified West Indian teams that dominated the game in the 1970s and 1980s. Following a 20-year period of sustained success, the Windies went into decline, a fall that even the presence of the great Brian Lara could not prevent.
